(More customer reviews)Positive: Good CPU performance, and dedicated GPU. Hard to find a 14" laptop these days with a decent GPU for this price. The screen has a higher resolution of 1600 x 900. The touchpad is a good size for a 14" notebook. Another good point is the VGA and HDMI outputs as well as a IEEE 1394 (S400). Comes with a SD card reader, and a Sony memory stick reader. The built in camera and microphone comes in handy for those of you who use video conferencing functions. The picture quality is great.
Neutrals: The integrated speakers are about average for a laptop this size. the keyboard is a good size, but you may or may not like the keys. They are similar to those found on Macbooks.
Negative or (could be positive for some): Out of the box, Sony loads the computer with a lot of software, you may find it useful. I personally performed a clean install after the purchase. Unfortunately Sony does not provide a clean install disc, but instead uses a separate restore partition. This means that if you want to perform a true clean install, you're going to have to find the Windows 7 DVD media yourself.
In conclusion, this is an excellent laptop. It is quite fast, the screen looks great, and it runs cool. It is portable, but not ultra portable like my x200s Thinkpad. The core i5 is a dual core cpu with hyper threading so it looks like 4 cores to Windows. This CPU is very power efficient and clocks down to reduce heat/power consumption when possible. It is a very fast CPU made with Intel's latest and smallest fabrication process. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, that this laptop was able to Play everything I've thrown at-- Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2; Dragon Age Origins without any problems.

(More customer reviews)This is my second vaio and I'm upgrading from a 3 year old CS. I was very happy with my CS but I traded it and went for the new i5 processor.
PROS:
Looks, fast speed, Processor i5-430 built in September 2010, no heat, light weight, travel friendly, 4gb expandable to 8gb.
CONS:
Gloss screen (although adjustable), Low volume in speakers, would need more care, less rough.
REMEDIES:
A wireless mouse, Screen privacy filter, Keyboard skin, External speakers.*KEYBOARD
It will take like two or three days to get use to it, since the keyboard is off center, also the keys are a bit more separated from each other than in former vaio models. The keypad is ok. I can't find a display-off button like in the old model.
*TRACKPAD/MOUSE
I see that a mouse is more convenient for every day use than the trackpad. The pad is useful for browsing pictures and allows for gesture commands like zoom in and zoom out. The pad can be configured though to do only basic point and click.
*BUILD/LOOKS
It looks good and professional but I can see that is going to be more fragile than the other. It's been only one week so I cannot say if the palm rests will last or not. It's thin and not heavy. It's lighter than the CS. Good thing the AC adapter is not bulky at all.*SCREEN
I find it a little bit more glossy, but it's ok when tilting the computer. It's good for movies and for presentations. Although needs a bit of setting adjustments at the control panel to display to your needs. Less contrast and less saturation and it will be ok.*SOFTWARE
Most of the prepackaged software is useless. Except for Media Gallery, just do not choose to install Sample Content, it will get annoying.
*EXTRAS
Blu ray is good, 3 ports of USB, eSATA, HDMI. I bought it for business but it will be a good computer for watching movies and series.
*BATTERY LIFE
From 2-3 hours.
*PROCESSOR SPEED
It has not let me down here, and I bought it for this main reason. This version has got Windows 7 64 bit, it starts very quickly and shuts off in seconds too. Overall processor performance for VPN, VMs and transfer files has been seamless, no problems and no heat.

Revised this review after one year: The computer went back to the BackStage (Sony Repair) 3 times already. The mother board failed earlier this year. Followed by broken keyboard. This time the hard disk failed. All within 14 month of purchase. Sony said the repair bill is going to be $280 + tax. Since they already took $100 from me just to look at it.......
Do not buy ANY SONY PRODUCT. Poor quality (after the service period) They looks great when you get it and the poor quality just catch up.
I totally regrate I bought this machine!

Sony VAIO VPC-EA45FX/BJ 14-Inch Widescreen Entertainment Laptop (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)First an explanation -- I was in the first batch of people to buy this computer from Amazon. But I have had to return it because the bluetooth was defective (confirmed by tech support). Amazon quickly sold out and is now backordered 3-5 weeks, and since I need a machine "now" I have had to buy something else rather than get a replacement for this model.
That said, here is why, though I like the machine, I was not too disappointed to get something different.
What I did not like :
1. All 3 USB ports are on the extreme front of the right side -- pretty dumb, because if you have devices always plugged in, the cables are always in your way. This may sound anal, but in fact I bet most people will find it a constant nuisance.
2. There appears to be no way (certainly no easy way!) to re-assign the three physical buttons above the keyboard. They do internet-without-computer (never use it), Vaio help (really, how often?) and the Sony photo etc program (NEVER use it and don't like it). But they can't be changed. (My old Vaio had buttons that you set to do whatever you wanted.)
3. I was all excited to have been able to order the MATT black, as I hate the glossy crap that is so popular these days. Well, yeah, turns out that it's matt ... EXCEPT for the most important part, in front of the keyboard where your wrists rest. That panel is super glossy, so it feels "sticky," you know, that annoying feel of rubbing against glossy plastic, exactly what I wantd to avoid. WHY do they do that on a "matt" black machine?
4. The screen is TOO GLOSSY (too much reflection). (I know, they all do that now...)
5. Touchpad is textured. Not bad, but I prefer smooth and dull.
(Final comment -- why can't computer companies offer SOMETHING for those of us who do not like the wide screens? I long for the old proportions, higher and less wide.)
What I do like about the machine -- well, all the obvious, good performance, good keyboard, very fair price, reasonable compromise on size, price, portability, power.

(More customer reviews)I was a bit disappointed with my new Sony laptop. First off, it's described as white but it's actually silver. The only white is the keypad. Secondly, the keypad is a bit cheap feeling....the plastic doesn't feel solid. Also, the screen resolution isn't as sharp as I expected for a laptop dubbed an "entertainment device." All-in-all, $800 is too much for this device. I've long enjoyed Sony Vaio laptops, but think I will stick with HP devices in the future, which have better hardware quality and price performance.

Hi, this is my first personal laptop,always wanted to own a Sony VAIO.I bought one black color piece last week from Amazon, I am very much impressed with the look and performance of it, but still I need to explore what r all the features it contains.The keypad is awesome and the screen quality is soo good, watched few movies and the sound quality, though the volume is low(guess this is a standard for all Sony systems) but u could get the feel of quality music.

Webcam should of been better as well and not as much features on it.
All in all I give it a 8.5/10
I would recommend this to anyone who wants an above decent laptop.

(More customer reviews)I always thought vaio's were out of my budget, but at amazon it was much cheaper than anywhere else, and even cheaper than an equivalent dell with my stundent discount. I chose this computer because it is pretty light, has a decent keyboard, a lot of memory, and big hard drive, great for the simulations I run. The only things I didn't like is that the screen reflects too much (but I guess all the new computers are like that now), the mouse click is kinda lound, the cd drive seems a bit fragile and squeaks, and it did not come with the windows cd in case I need to reinstall it. I got this computer only a couple of months a go, so I can't tell how durable it is. The battery seems to last 4hr at the most, which I believe is standard. I mostly use it plugged in. You might be able to buy a battery that lasts longer and put in it.

(More customer reviews)I have had my V505 for about 6 months now. I have persistent problems with the touch pad as so many have noted here. But I also have problems with the space bar not registering a touch on the right end of the bar so words run on without spaces if you use your right thumb to type the space bar.
Another frequently occuring and annoying problem is the cursor randomly jumps to odd places in a document so I find myself typing in the middle of a sentence two lines above or some where else than where it should be.
Some days I hate this computer. I wish I had bought a IBM T40.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my kid @ $650. Great computer at this price. They play Maple Story and this computer has plenty of power for that. Nice display. Sony build. Revised this review after one year: The computer went back to the BackStage (Sony Repair) 3 times already. The mother board failed earlier this year. Followed by broken keyboard. This time the hard disk failed. All within 14 month of purchase. Sony said the repair bill is going to be $280 + tax. Since they already took $100 from me just to look at it.......
Do not buy ANY SONY PRODUCT. Poor quality (after the service period) They looks great when you get it and the poor quality just catch up.
I totally regrate I bought this machine!
