Sony VAIO VPC-EB11FX/BI 15.5-Inch Laptop (Black) Review

Sony VAIO VPC-EB11FX/BI 15.5-Inch Laptop (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had my Sony Vaio VPC EB11FX in white/silver for a few months now, and I can say its probably the best laptop I've ever purchased.
I have a strong Apple background, having owned a powerbook, macbook, and macbook pro with core 2 duo. The switch back to PC was due to my needs for Windows environment as well as a numeric keypad. The Vaio invited me back to the PC side with a warm welcome.
For $650 my Vaio VPC EB11FX came configured exactly how its listed on this amazon page. I couldn't find any other laptop that met my criteria with the price i was okay with:
Chiclet Keyboard
Numeric Pad
excellent 15" screen
good specs for capable and smooth multimedia playback and light gaming
--
Aesthetics:
The look and feel of this laptop may not inspire you, but it is well thought out with 4 USB ports (1 of them is a USB/eSata port on the left) as well as a quality touch in the way the screen sits out and below the level of the computer. The screen is 15.5" and while its not 1440x900 resolution like on my previous macbook pro, I don't feel deprived of the extra pixel detail. The screen is bright, colors look great when viewing pics and vids, and blacks LOOK black and not a shade of grey. This alone amazed me. It could be the glossy screen that causes colors to appear stronger, as this is the first glossy screen i've owned. The backlight is CCFL, not LED, which I say would only benefit me in that it does not use mercury. Oh yeah, the built-in webcam works well with the easy to use webcam companion software thats included.
When closed, the laptop looks much thinner than it really is due to the two tone combination of white and black for the mainboard. At around 5-6 lbs the weight is what you'd expect with other laptops with 15" screens.
Performance:
This laptop just blazes by with Windows 7, which has its merits and very little to complain about comparing to OSX. With the base Core i3 and integrated gfx, Aero looks awesome and is buttery smooth. I constantly run Chrome Web Browser with many tabs, itunes, IM chat, GIMP, and video playback all at the same time, and I've yet to see the machine hiccup. I dip into the 4gb of memory with 1gb left free usually. I have not deliberately tried to test the limits of my machine, but mind you, its likely able to handle whatever casual/multimedia tasks you can throw at it for daily personal use, school, or at the office.
The machine comes with great conveniences such as the ASSIST and WEB button which help you run maintenance/solve issues and quickboot to web without windows running, respectively.
Cons:
Aside from the confidence I have in the looks and performance of this laptop, I must include that I have very few qualms overall.
-Battery life is a meager 2 hours doing light web browsing. Watch a movie with full brightness and I'm not sure you'll get an hour and half. I could care less as I always have it plugged in.
-The trackpad could use better software (I wish it could scroll with multitouch ala Apple and Asus laptops). The included functionality for the trackpad is powered by Alps, and it isn't up to par IMO. The multitouch gestures available are Flick, Pinch Zoom, and Pivot Rotation. Yawn. Just give me scroll with two fingers and I'm happy. Maybe I will come across software/driver that can let me do this. For now, scrolling up and down with the right end of the trackpad will suffice. Aside from this, I do run into a few rare instances where I am moving the cursor around and suddenly the cursor hangs or jumps erratically. This could be due to particles on the touchpad that is interfering with my touch, but just FYI anyway.
-Speaker quality could be better and overall louder, but I use earphones or play music through my B&W Zepellin via airtunes most of the time.
-Viewing angles of the screen is horrid. I expect this with any screen coming in a $600 laptop. Show me a $600 machine with IPS panel, then I can blame Sony for the viewing angles. Until then, this is the best of any comparable price range. The bottom line is the screen will be fine for you but may suck for anyone else joining in from an angle. As you can see, the nature of the issues I've reported have a minimal impact on my computing experience, mostly because they aren't that big of a deal aside from battery life. If you are looking for battery life, look elsewhere.
The Sony Vaio VPC EB11FX is the laptop you want with a bright screen you don't need to squint your eyes on. It is competently fast with daily tasks and multimedia playback. Your hands will thank you as it is a delight to type on and doesn't scald your lap like other laptops (APPLE, anyone?). And considering I have not run into any software glitches, BSD and the like, I'd say Sony has a smart, quality 6 lbs package for anyone on a budget looking for their next laptop that will last them for years to come without a hitch.

After replacing my 8 year old Dell Laptop, I looked into this Vaio upon the recommendation of a few friends. I'm not a tech-guy by any stretch, just wanted a solid everyday home laptop with good memory for interent, Itunes, Quickbooks, Skype and some word processing (no gaming) and this laptop absolutely fit the bill! Solid construction, unique and appealing design (case texture is great, shows no fingerprints), comfortable, wide and spacious keyboard, lightning fast-start up and downloads, user-freindly, gorgeous Hi-Def screen, great for watching videos and DVD's, fast CD and DVD burner and an awesome camera for Skyping with friends and family. For the price (just a shy over $600) and complete with Windows 7, you can't beat it! Battery life is fine too. Unlike some complaints, mine gets just under 3 hours which suits my needs and also charges very fast. I've had freinds that have owned Vaio's years with little to no problems, and now glad to own one myself. If you're looking for a rock solid laptop with style and function, get this one. I'm happy I made this purchase, would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone!

I got this laptop when my Dell Inspiron 1525 pooped out (I can't even say "old" Dell because I'd only had it for 1 year and 9 months). The processor is a little on the slow side, but it's fine for me to use my Adobe programs like Photoshop, which says a lot because Photoshop can really be a hog. I was shopping for something with a larger screen; 13'' is too small for me but 17'' is too bag, and this is perfect for me. It's a little on the heavy side, but fine to carry in a laptop bag. I also like the color because I was looking for something other than black, and the white is actually sparkly if you look closely!

I am a PC guy, but I am also familiar with Macs. I love the Sony VAIO...this is my third one since 2001 and they are all still working great. This new one though is the best. My favorite aspects are the beautiful screen, Windows 7, and the Blu-ray player. I have used it for a couple weeks now, and it really is a laptop I just love to work on. The new graphical items in Windows 7 are awesome, which makes the user experience much more fun. The VAIO also comes with pre-installed software, but it's all stuff you want to keep on it--like the Sony audio/video applications. And again, I just can't stress enough how wonderful the screen is. My wife is a photographer, and she has taken some photos that just have that "so real" look to them on the screen...kind of like viewing a Blu-ray moview on a great TV. I am very pleased with this purchase.

Sony Vaio VGN-FW590F3B 16.4 4GB BluRay Burner Laptop
Average Reviews:

I just received this laptop 2 days ago. I've been using it as I've been setting it up as my main PC. It has a great build. Feels and looks fantastic. I watched a blue-ray disc and it looked great on the laptop's screen. Bluetooth is nice to have to be able to listen to music from the laptop on my bluetooth headset.
I've used it on battery power and it lasted over an hour and a half, and I had the setting at "balanced". The system said I had over 62% battery life remaining and I had been viewing video, pics, and wireless web usage.
The only thing that I haven't adjusted to yet is the sound from the fan whenever it's plugged in. I have it set to "Performance" mode whenever it is plugged in, but the sound from the fan kind of is going to get some taking used to. It's not loud, but you can hear it when things are quiet. It's not much, but something I'll have to get used to.
The other thing, which is minor, are the stickers Sony put on the wrist wrests. I would have rather not had the stickers all over the the wrist wrests. But hey, that's just me being picky. It has nothing to do with the system or the performance.
Reason I gave it 4 stars: was because of the fan. Were it not for the fan noise, it would have been 5 stars. I'm sure in a month or so, I will be used to the fan and will change it to 5 stars.

Average Reviews:

i bought this laptop at fry's during a 1 day sale for 699.99 and is normally an [...] laptop. the specs are solid across the board with windows seven pre-installed and works perfectly for a laptop, the spacing of the keys are very nicely placed so that you won't trip over typing each letter as well as virtually a finger print free plastic casing it comes in unlike an hp where it's a high gloss, metallic finish and will get tons of fingerprints. the speed is 2.20 ghz and an intel core 2 duo processor so you are getting very decent to above average speed (3/5 stars) for the money depending what you are using it for. it comes with a blu-ray play which i personally i wasn't too concerned about but unless again, you are using this more so for something other then a dependable and fast laptop and already have a ton of blu-rays. the 320 gb hd is more then enough memory for school projects and papers so you won't have a problem if you are using it for non computer graphical oriented classes for the software it needs if graphics design is your major. and lastly the video card is worth the investment, the ati 4700 mobility card is a 2009 issue and with it's dedicated 512 mb memory you won't have to worry about playing 95 percent of most games in the last year or games upcoming. sony offers a service like a lo-jack for laptops where for 15 dollars you will get a lifetime service for tracking your stolen or lost laptop so you can't go wrong with that just peel the tracking sticker off and put it on the bottom of your laptop and use the same number to go to [...] and you will have lifetime service.
the only gripes i really have which i'm knit picking is that it comes with a blu-ray but not a true 1080p it is 1366 x 768 so if you must have a laptop that plays blu-rays but not an absolute 1080p then this laptop won't have it but on a 15.5 inch screen it won't matter that much this feature is the last thing you should be concerned about as an educated consumer. the battery life says 4 hours but i have my brightness on high so i get about 2.45 to 3 hours, i upgraded to a 4400 mah, 11.1 volt battery so i will have about 6.
as a multi-functional school/multimedia/gaming laptop this gets a 10/10 if you pay less then retail, and an 8.5/10 if you pay full retail price only because if you do your research and find a spec on another laptop to your liking for the price like an led backlight display instead of the tft screen this comes with it would only be more of a minute detail, then you might go for that instead but either way you can't go wrong with any of the specs here. when you invest hard earned cash on something you want the best bang for your buck and invest not to upgrade so get a very worth while laptop because like all electronic devices most of the upgrades depending the quality you get won't matter they are more selling points.

I bought this laptop several months ago, and it is by far the best computer I have ever owned. It is lightening fast, I purposely opened fourteen programs just to test the processor, and all of them performed at full capacity. It plays DVD and Bluray Discs with beautiful clarity. My computer included Word/Excel Starter 2010, which is perfect for school or work. Starter is not supposed to have full functionality but I have not found anything that I needed to do that was not included. The built in web-cam and microphone are very convenient and the software has some cool features to play around with. The card reader is also very convenient along with the abundant USB and HDMI ports. Windows 7 did take some getting used to, the documents and window setup are very different, although I had stuck with XP throughout the Vista era. If you are familiar with Vista (and like it) then you will find Windows 7 to have all the perks and none of the pitfalls. The keys are spaced wide which would be useful for someone with larger fingers, though I am not that someone so it took me a few days of typing to become familiar. The battery lasts FOREVER in "Balanced," mode. Right out of the box I watched two DVDs with two hours stand-by time in between. I have had it in the case on hibernate for two days at a time and it still opended and started right up. It is not sluggish on battery power, even when it is low.
There were only a couple things that could have been improved. The speakers, while sufficient, could be a little louder and as with most laptops, there isn't much to the woofers. I did notice that after the first few weeks, the tabs/windows in Internet Explorer started taking awhile to close. This only occured within IE8, not any other programs. I know that on every other computer I and people I know use, IE8 takes several minutes to load. On the Vaio, opens and loads immediately. The mouse is "skips a beat," every once in awhile, but not enough to effect the functionality of the computer or software.
Although this is a microsoft gripe, not sony, finding your filepaths may be a bit tricky at first. I had some trouble navigating the new OS but after a few weeks I had the hang of it for the most part.
Overall, this computer performs like one that should have cost triple what I paid. Sony computers have always been one of the best, and this is just another testament of their reputation.

I bought this laptop from a different retailer several months ago. I am extremely happy with my purchase! The only thing that that could be improved on is the sound which could be a little louder. I LOVE that this has the HDMI port (this was actually the main reason I chose this!) By connecting an HMDI cable from my laptop to TV, I am able to surf the web on a 50 inch screen (as well as watch movies, etc). I noticed that someone commented on the keyboard - personally, I have had no problems. My mom has Rheumatoid arthritis and uses my laptop frequently with no complaints. I think the keyboard is really cool! Plus if you shop around you can get a keyboard skin for under five bucks (The EB series fit perfectly!) I use this laptop for everything - school (Microsoft office), graphic design(Photoshop), and download many things to the hard drive. It has continued to run flawlessly! Also, there is an "assist" button that connects you with live help from Sony 24/7 (It's free, I use it all the time!) I highly recommend this laptop!!

I recently purchased this laptop at a big-box store (price was lower) - and I love it. It's a replacement for my 3-year old desktop, and I couldn't be happier. I run a lot of photo-editing software so I needed a system that could handle multiple large programs at once and this laptop doesn't flinch - everything is smooth and seamless, the display is beautiful and the 10-digit keypad is a nice touch. The battery life is solid at 3.5 hours, too. No complaints!

I really am suprised at how much I am liking this little sucker the more I use it, the back lit keyboard is really nice for myself. I got it in a pinch as i have been traveling a little more then usual. I bought it really expecting to return it, thinking the overall (especially screen) size was too small. I can say that due to overall quality, and design, i am really impressed, of course there is the bloatware one must get rid of, but one of the biggest things I like is the keyboard, I am not a great typest or even a typist, so this is such a nice suprise, i guess its just the ergonomics are so well thought out or the "solid" feel maybe...but its great! watching any kind of news video, or a true 1080HD so far is stellar on this little screen, the wireless antenna is simply rockingly sensitive, the best at picking up signals compared to others everytime I have checked another laptop and mine together.
I was seconds away from purchasing an Apple Macbook Air, due to they're design in their quality of materials and ergonomics philosophy, I was sold once I picked it up and "felt" how well made and "saw" the fit and finish and "knew" of the great customer satisfaction apple provides. The saleman and I went to one certain site i couldnt use my desktop for, the only site the portability was important (paramount really) I needed to use a laptop for, and the software to update the speed and redlight camera databases only worked with windows 7, the reason I am telling the whole story is....I am comparing it to the Macbook Air 13" which was aluminium, not plastic, and running Mac OS, so the sony doesnt have a better material for its casing, apple gets that one, and the OS is your call as I certainly have nothing against Windows 7 (its the bomb IMHO) so....the build quality is second to none (up to and including Apple) and due to its ability to do everything I need, and do it with this awesome keyboard and solid build, an example of this is; the hinges on screen(and screen) are built very well, and balanced perfectly (slightly loosened over time so-as to lift up EXACTLY like the macbooks. I dont forget the Apple's are the benchmark, but sony did thier homework on them, its styled very much like a macbook air, slightly larger, but it was $600 dollars less, and for the price the sony had a faster processer then the air with its core duo (at time of this writing, expected updates anytime), vs i5, 500gb HDD vs 640gb, and numerous other little thing you get (and dont get without buying an Apple) I personally feel like its my own Windows Macbook, only because its built so damn well....
If you are looking for a "smaller" sized, quality laptop on par, and in some way maybe even an edge' on others, and certainly better then your kids 15" "run of the mill" school laptop, this little baby is fast, huge HDD, great Xtra's HDD protection, and the ever getting cooler and more useful (to myself) intel wireless display then its gonna end up being a good choice, even for a guy thinking he was gonna take it back, now its my buddy, and because it is small, yet well built, I use it and take it more then all other computers, even when not traveling, my new 17" toshiba sits, while i grab the lil one thats not only fast, reliable and looks great, has a keyboard that make it easy for me to type, which is important to me..

My first laptop that I bought was an HP DV9000 and I only had problems with it. I had it for around 2 years and finally I had had enough of it. I found this laptop here on amazon and then I was told that it was cheaper on best buy. I placed the order on best buy and I had it expressed. a day later I was told that it was back-ordered so I called in to cancel the order. I cancelled it over the phone and then placed a new order for this laptop. a few days later I was told that both laptops had shipped out. finally I got everything figured out and returned the original laptop.
now for the review:
I really love everything about it. my old hp laptop used to overheat like crazy but because this laptop's "vent" (for lack of a better word) is on the side it never overheats. the sound is great. windows 7 is beautiful. and the best part about it is that it is really light. I can close it and carry it to another place without any problem (unlike my old laptop which weighed a whopping 8.5 lbs. I also like that the keyboard's keys have spaces between them. the plug also has a cool hard thing that is in the shape of an 'L' and that way the plug doesn't have to bend and break. it has 4 USB jacks and the DVD player is really nice.
the webcam's quality is really great (has a slight buzzy sound but besides for that its really good)
