(More customer reviews)This is my second vaio and I'm upgrading from a 3 year old CS. I was very happy with my CS but I traded it and went for the new i5 processor.
PROS:
Looks, fast speed, Processor i5-430 built in September 2010, no heat, light weight, travel friendly, 4gb expandable to 8gb.
CONS:
Gloss screen (although adjustable), Low volume in speakers, would need more care, less rough.
REMEDIES:
A wireless mouse, Screen privacy filter, Keyboard skin, External speakers.*KEYBOARD
It will take like two or three days to get use to it, since the keyboard is off center, also the keys are a bit more separated from each other than in former vaio models. The keypad is ok. I can't find a display-off button like in the old model.
*TRACKPAD/MOUSE
I see that a mouse is more convenient for every day use than the trackpad. The pad is useful for browsing pictures and allows for gesture commands like zoom in and zoom out. The pad can be configured though to do only basic point and click.
*BUILD/LOOKS
It looks good and professional but I can see that is going to be more fragile than the other. It's been only one week so I cannot say if the palm rests will last or not. It's thin and not heavy. It's lighter than the CS. Good thing the AC adapter is not bulky at all.*SCREEN
I find it a little bit more glossy, but it's ok when tilting the computer. It's good for movies and for presentations. Although needs a bit of setting adjustments at the control panel to display to your needs. Less contrast and less saturation and it will be ok.*SOFTWARE
Most of the prepackaged software is useless. Except for Media Gallery, just do not choose to install Sample Content, it will get annoying.
*EXTRAS
Blu ray is good, 3 ports of USB, eSATA, HDMI. I bought it for business but it will be a good computer for watching movies and series.
*BATTERY LIFE
From 2-3 hours.
*PROCESSOR SPEED
It has not let me down here, and I bought it for this main reason. This version has got Windows 7 64 bit, it starts very quickly and shuts off in seconds too. Overall processor performance for VPN, VMs and transfer files has been seamless, no problems and no heat.

Revised this review after one year: The computer went back to the BackStage (Sony Repair) 3 times already. The mother board failed earlier this year. Followed by broken keyboard. This time the hard disk failed. All within 14 month of purchase. Sony said the repair bill is going to be $280 + tax. Since they already took $100 from me just to look at it.......
Do not buy ANY SONY PRODUCT. Poor quality (after the service period) They looks great when you get it and the poor quality just catch up.
I totally regrate I bought this machine!

(More customer reviews)i bought this laptop at fry's during a 1 day sale for 699.99 and is normally an [...] laptop. the specs are solid across the board with windows seven pre-installed and works perfectly for a laptop, the spacing of the keys are very nicely placed so that you won't trip over typing each letter as well as virtually a finger print free plastic casing it comes in unlike an hp where it's a high gloss, metallic finish and will get tons of fingerprints. the speed is 2.20 ghz and an intel core 2 duo processor so you are getting very decent to above average speed (3/5 stars) for the money depending what you are using it for. it comes with a blu-ray play which i personally i wasn't too concerned about but unless again, you are using this more so for something other then a dependable and fast laptop and already have a ton of blu-rays. the 320 gb hd is more then enough memory for school projects and papers so you won't have a problem if you are using it for non computer graphical oriented classes for the software it needs if graphics design is your major. and lastly the video card is worth the investment, the ati 4700 mobility card is a 2009 issue and with it's dedicated 512 mb memory you won't have to worry about playing 95 percent of most games in the last year or games upcoming. sony offers a service like a lo-jack for laptops where for 15 dollars you will get a lifetime service for tracking your stolen or lost laptop so you can't go wrong with that just peel the tracking sticker off and put it on the bottom of your laptop and use the same number to go to [...] and you will have lifetime service.
the only gripes i really have which i'm knit picking is that it comes with a blu-ray but not a true 1080p it is 1366 x 768 so if you must have a laptop that plays blu-rays but not an absolute 1080p then this laptop won't have it but on a 15.5 inch screen it won't matter that much this feature is the last thing you should be concerned about as an educated consumer. the battery life says 4 hours but i have my brightness on high so i get about 2.45 to 3 hours, i upgraded to a 4400 mah, 11.1 volt battery so i will have about 6.
as a multi-functional school/multimedia/gaming laptop this gets a 10/10 if you pay less then retail, and an 8.5/10 if you pay full retail price only because if you do your research and find a spec on another laptop to your liking for the price like an led backlight display instead of the tft screen this comes with it would only be more of a minute detail, then you might go for that instead but either way you can't go wrong with any of the specs here. when you invest hard earned cash on something you want the best bang for your buck and invest not to upgrade so get a very worth while laptop because like all electronic devices most of the upgrades depending the quality you get won't matter they are more selling points.

(More customer reviews)First an explanation -- I was in the first batch of people to buy this computer from Amazon. But I have had to return it because the bluetooth was defective (confirmed by tech support). Amazon quickly sold out and is now backordered 3-5 weeks, and since I need a machine "now" I have had to buy something else rather than get a replacement for this model.
That said, here is why, though I like the machine, I was not too disappointed to get something different.
What I did not like :
1. All 3 USB ports are on the extreme front of the right side -- pretty dumb, because if you have devices always plugged in, the cables are always in your way. This may sound anal, but in fact I bet most people will find it a constant nuisance.
2. There appears to be no way (certainly no easy way!) to re-assign the three physical buttons above the keyboard. They do internet-without-computer (never use it), Vaio help (really, how often?) and the Sony photo etc program (NEVER use it and don't like it). But they can't be changed. (My old Vaio had buttons that you set to do whatever you wanted.)
3. I was all excited to have been able to order the MATT black, as I hate the glossy crap that is so popular these days. Well, yeah, turns out that it's matt ... EXCEPT for the most important part, in front of the keyboard where your wrists rest. That panel is super glossy, so it feels "sticky," you know, that annoying feel of rubbing against glossy plastic, exactly what I wantd to avoid. WHY do they do that on a "matt" black machine?
4. The screen is TOO GLOSSY (too much reflection). (I know, they all do that now...)
5. Touchpad is textured. Not bad, but I prefer smooth and dull.
(Final comment -- why can't computer companies offer SOMETHING for those of us who do not like the wide screens? I long for the old proportions, higher and less wide.)
What I do like about the machine -- well, all the obvious, good performance, good keyboard, very fair price, reasonable compromise on size, price, portability, power.

Secondly, the keypad is a bit cheap feeling....the plastic doesn't feel solid. Also, the screen resolution isn't as sharp as I expected for a laptop dubbed an "entertainment device." All-in-all, $800 is too much for this device. I've long enjoyed Sony Vaio laptops, but think I will stick with HP devices in the future, which have better hardware quality and price performance.

(More customer reviews)I always thought vaio's were out of my budget, but at amazon it was much cheaper than anywhere else, and even cheaper than an equivalent dell with my stundent discount. I chose this computer because it is pretty light, has a decent keyboard, a lot of memory, and big hard drive, great for the simulations I run. The only things I didn't like is that the screen reflects too much (but I guess all the new computers are like that now), the mouse click is kinda lound, the cd drive seems a bit fragile and squeaks, and it did not come with the windows cd in case I need to reinstall it. I got this computer only a couple of months a go, so I can't tell how durable it is. The battery seems to last 4hr at the most, which I believe is standard. I mostly use it plugged in. You might be able to buy a battery that lasts longer and put in it.

I run a lot of photo-editing software so I needed a system that could handle multiple large programs at once and this laptop doesn't flinch - everything is smooth and seamless, the display is beautiful and the 10-digit keypad is a nice touch. The battery life is solid at 3.5 hours, too. No complaints!

But I also have problems with the space bar not registering a touch on the right end of the bar so words run on without spaces if you use your right thumb to type the space bar.
Another frequently occuring and annoying problem is the cursor randomly jumps to odd places in a document so I find myself typing in the middle of a sentence two lines above or some where else than where it should be.
Some days I hate this computer. I wish I had bought a IBM T40.

(More customer reviews)I bought this for my kid @ $650. Great computer at this price. They play Maple Story and this computer has plenty of power for that. Nice display. Sony build. Revised this review after one year: The computer went back to the BackStage (Sony Repair) 3 times already. The mother board failed earlier this year. Followed by broken keyboard. This time the hard disk failed. All within 14 month of purchase. Sony said the repair bill is going to be $280 + tax. Since they already took $100 from me just to look at it.......
Do not buy ANY SONY PRODUCT. Poor quality (after the service period) They looks great when you get it and the poor quality just catch up.
I totally regrate I bought this machine!
