Sony VAIO(R) VPCCW26FX/W 14" Notebook PC - White Review

Positive: Good CPU performance, and dedicated GPU. Hard to find a 14" laptop these days with a decent GPU for this price. The screen has a higher resolution of 1600 x 900. The touchpad is a good size for a 14" notebook. Another good point is the VGA and HDMI outputs as well as a IEEE 1394 (S400). Comes with a SD card reader, and a Sony memory stick reader. The built in camera and microphone comes in handy for those of you who use video conferencing functions. The picture quality is great.
Neutrals: The integrated speakers are about average for a laptop this size. the keyboard is a good size, but you may or may not like the keys. They are similar to those found on Macbooks.
Negative or (could be positive for some): Out of the box, Sony loads the computer with a lot of software, you may find it useful. I personally performed a clean install after the purchase. Unfortunately Sony does not provide a clean install disc, but instead uses a separate restore partition. This means that if you want to perform a true clean install, you're going to have to find the Windows 7 DVD media yourself.
In conclusion, this is an excellent laptop. It is quite fast, the screen looks great, and it runs cool. It is portable, but not ultra portable like my x200s Thinkpad. The core i5 is a dual core cpu with hyper threading so it looks like 4 cores to Windows. This CPU is very power efficient and clocks down to reduce heat/power consumption when possible. It is a very fast CPU made with Intel's latest and smallest fabrication process. Oh, I almost forgot to mention, that this laptop was able to Play everything I've thrown at-- Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2; Dragon Age Origins without any problems.
Great laptop for the money!

Sony VAIO VGN-FW510F/H 16.4-Inch Gray Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) Review

Sony VAIO VGN-FW510F/H 16.4-Inch Gray Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
Good specs for a mid-grade notebook
Comforable & quiet keyboard
Upward facing speakers
HDMI output
Aesthetically pleasing
Cons:
LCD is dark even at full brightness
Fan comes on intermitently every 4-5 mins
Heavy (6.9 pounds)
Low battery life (~2.5hrs on light usage)
Review:
I bought this at Bestbuy the weekend of Black Friday ($649.99). It's rare to find a mid-grade notebook that has dedicated graphics, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, GigE & 802.11n connectivity, and a 1600x900 display. Even at MSRP, the specs are pretty good for the price. The keyboard is very quiet and comfortable to type on. The touchpad is a decent size but the 2 buttons are hard to click (I generally use the touchpad tap gestures). The max volume on the speakers are pretty good and they actually face up. Many lower end notebooks have them facing down going away from your ear and also gets muffled if you put it on your bed. The HDMI is great for connecting to an external display. Unfortunately, the integrated glossy 1600x900 xbrite-eco display looks pretty bad. Even on max brightness, the LCD is not very bright. The viewing angles are bad. Normal sized text is hard to read unless you're looking at the LCD straight-on. This is my first experience with extended usage on a Sony xbrite-eco display and I'm a bit disappointed. I haven't used a TN-panel in 3 years, so I am a bit spoiled on monitors. I'm also very conscious of computer noise. The fan comes on and off frequently and cannot be controlled by 3rd party software (This is true of all Sony Vaios). I checked this out using HWMonitor. The PC idles around 50C. When the CPU gets stressed to 59C, the fan starts spinning and cooling the CPU down until 51C, then stops. This is a regular pattern that occurs maybe every 4-5 mins, but on the other hand, many notebook cooling systems are the same way. The good thing is this never becomes one of those lap-scorchers. This thing is quite heavy at 6.9 pounds. The big LCD and dedicated graphics add weight and also trim down the 4400mAH battery's life. I get 2.5hrs on light usage. I think this could have used a bigger battery, but I think Sony didn't want to have to market a 7 pound+ computer. There is still pre-installed garbage software that you'll want to uninstall but it's not as bad as it used to be. This is currently my main computer and I usually have it "docked" to my external S-IPS Dell monitor, external keyboard/mouse, and constantly charged, so I don't feel the effect of the dull LCD, weight, or battery life.
Overall, I still really like the computer. To get similar specs elsewhere, you'd have to spend $1000+. It looks very sleek and has the Sony "Vaio" branding if you're into that. With a 16"+ laptop, weight and lowered battery life are a given. The hardware is very good other than the LCD and the cooling sytem is a little bit below average in my opinion. I'd say if this looks good on paper to you, head down to a brick and mortar to check out the LCD brightness, viewing angles, and weight before making your decision.

I purchased this notebook from Fry's on 9.25.09. I wanted a notebook with Blu-Ray as I have a player at home and over 100 discs. I wanted to be able to watch then on a notebook when I travel rather than dvd. I also wanted a gaming laptop to play some games on mainly Diablo 3 when it is released. The Blu-Ray playback is great and it looks good, obviously it's best when viewed on a huge hdtv, the smaller the screen size the less amazing it looks. The ATI graphics card is good not great I am able to run Bioshock at max settings but most other games are best at medium settings. The screen is big and perfect for movies as it's 16x9 and gaming as well. It's plenty fast and I am only using Vista Premium 64 as my Windows 7 will be shipped to me in the next few days according to Sony. Only complaints are price, you are paying for name brand so you may not get as much as the competition in terms of specs, but this is one sexy looking computer. The major problem for most would be the audio, it's just too damn low. Since I primarily use it with headphones it's fine as it's excellent when you use headphones. If you want to use it without I suggest getting an external speaker system to solve that problem. To sum it up if you are looking for a laptop with a big screen, Blu-Ray playback and able to play the occasional pc game this is definitely one laptop to consider.

I have been using this as my primary laptop for about two weeks now and I am very pleased.
Without going into detail about the technical specifications, suffice it to say the graphics are excellent, the display is sharp, the computer is quite fast.
I was a little apprehensive about the size, it is longer than most..almost 15 inches. But it is not heavy.
One bad point is that the built in wifi is the Intel 5100 A/G/N. If you are hoping that this means it will connect at N speeds to your N router..forget it. This card is N in name only and will connect at G speeds max. While a new driver, released after I bought the computer, has made the wifi connection more stable (at work, it would disconnect every 10 minutes or so) it does not make it faster. No combination of adapter or router settings is going to make this connect faster. 54Mbs is the best you will get. I am annoyed at this since I have a linksys router and access point at home. Both N. Looks like I am going to have to buy a USB or expresscard adapter to get N speed. Which raises another small point; no PCMCIA card slot. Expresscard only.
The power on button is on the end of the hinge and glows orange and slowly blinks when the computer is off. Looks cool, but definitely don't leave it in the bedroom if you are the "oh my god what the hell is that!" in the middle of the night sort

pVAIO FW460J/T Notebook features an extra-wide 16.4 XBRITE-ECO LCD display. Great for viewing Blu-ray Disc movies or two web sites side-by-side. Minimizes those annoying black bars you see when playing widescreen movies. Powered by the energy-efficient and super-powerful Centrino 2 Processor Technology./p
