Sony VAIO(R) VPCZ128GX/B 13.1" Z Series Notebook PC - Black Review

Sony VAIO(R) VPCZ128GX/B 13.1 Z Series Notebook PC - Black

I bought Vaio VPCZ118 similar but with HD 256GB (SDD) and 4GB DDR3 and windows 7 pro. The laptop is generally magnificent,
Pros:
very fast, very few system errors, can move 1GB within the hard disk in few seconds. Searching in a MS outlook folder of 6000 emails folder takes no more than 2 seconds, that used to take around one minute in a regular PC. I tried the battery once and it lasted 3 hours while using bright screen with videos and office applications. Auto-adjust screen brightness. Keyboard buttons lights at the night is magnificent while working before sleep.
Cons:
The standard AntiVirus system McAfee made the system slow but improved after I removed it and installed ESET internet Security.
Speakers volume is low and lacks bass, too sharp.
The arrow-buttons don't function smoothly and need to press it harder than other buttons to guarantee the response.

I would not rate a 5-Star because the Eject button on the keyboard failed to eject the CD/DVD drive but this is relatively minor. Otherwise great laptop. I suggest the following accessories:
- Sumdex carrying case CKN-003. Although it's rated to fit up to 17", it's the slimmest, lightest an best designed case I found for the Sony AW 18.4" after a month's worth of research. The power adapter can be stored in the front compartment along with extra hardware such as an extra CD/DVD writer, and still maintains an extremely slim fit.
- Get a TV tuner. Mine was a Hauppauge 950Q but any comparable tuner would do. It is worth noting that the 950Q software interface failed to load the digital channels to Win Vista 64-bit, the tuner itself works great with Windows Vista Media center 64-bit.
I hope this balances out the review on May 19, 2009 which brought up two items which are very insignificant and misleading.

Sony VAIO VPCF136FX/B 16.4" F Series Laptop (1.73GHz Intel Core i7-740QM Processor, 6 GB RAM, 640 GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit) Review

The Sony VAIO f136 fx was not my first choice, but am glad I got it.
I was looking for a new machine to replace my HP6226 for doing 3D animation
(using Carrara, VUE, Cinema4d)
Almost got the ASUS G73JW-XA1, but bought the Sony from Fry's (same price as Amazon, but
already had an account to get the 0% 6mos financing)...Caution: just applying for a new
card, eg Bill Me Later, can lower your credit score.
The ASUS has more room for ram, 2 HD's, and a better graphics card, but is also heavier,
and a little too "gamey" looking.
Although the Sony was my 2nd choice, I'm very happy with it so far. BTW, the only other machine I'd get
now would be the HP Envy 17-1181nr.
I could still return the Sony, but would get hit with a 15% restocking fee.
The HP Envy has a better graphics card, bigger screen, better resolution, better sound quality,
and more durable exterior. But it's also a 1 lb heavier...a lot to lug around and the cpu is slightly slower.
That said, this is why I am happy & will keep the Sony:
1. i7-740qm cpu...hyper-threads when rendering.
2. nice screen...1600x900, 16.4" diagonal...a good size for me.
3. back-lit keyboard...good to type on...has a good feel to it.
4. very quiet (only noticible when it revs up in auto-over-clocking mode when rendering an animation)
5. good looks
6. Sony quality
7. seems lighter than it is.
Cons (minor criticisms)
1. the left/right "click" buttons on the keypad actually click...aren't smooth like the
alpha/numerics...would have liked them to be right of center vs left, too.
2. The finish is very stylish...a dull dark grey with the VAIO logo...but is easily
marred...in contrast, the HP Envy has an embossed surface that should look good much longer.
I'll just have to be more careful.
All in all, the Sony VAIO F136fx is a great laptop that should last me at least 3 yrs.
BTW, my HP Pavilion 6226 is still working amazingly well...it was only $700, and will still use
it as a backup, and for rendering parts of an animation.
But the Sony is 3-4x faster and will save me a lot of time.
Plan to add 2 more gb ram (8 total), and replace the HD with an Solid-state drive
down the road. But it's working great as is.
I still give it 5 stars. =)

Sony VAIO(R) VPCF13SFX/B Signature Series 16.4" Notebook PC - Black Review

We recently purchased this laptop to serve as a portable gaming machine. Also, was waiting for one with USB 3.0, which this one has. There is very little to complain about with this model. It's fast with a great screen display. I will list a few nit picks here. Screen in bright lights is a bit glary while gaming. It does get warm but not hot, I would recommend one of the laptop fan units to place under it. I'm not a fan of the mouse drag on any laptop so an external mouse was a must for me, as was a headset (built in speakers are a bit bright sounding and bass shy). Battery life is good unless into heavy gaming but I usually use the external power anyway. Since it is a gaming rig, all other functions run very smooth; movies, live video, favorite TV shows, etc. Oh yeah, the keyboard has one of the nicest feels of all I tried and the matt finish does not show up finger prints. I probably should have given this 5 stars but I am a bit tight on my recommendations.
Having said that, this model is highly recommended.
