(More customer reviews)The Sony VAIO f136 fx was not my first choice, but am glad I got it.
I was looking for a new machine to replace my HP6226 for doing 3D animation
(using Carrara, VUE, Cinema4d)
Almost got the ASUS G73JW-XA1, but bought the Sony from Fry's (same price as Amazon, but
already had an account to get the 0% 6mos financing)...Caution: just applying for a new
card, eg Bill Me Later, can lower your credit score.
The ASUS has more room for ram, 2 HD's, and a better graphics card, but is also heavier,
and a little too "gamey" looking.
Although the Sony was my 2nd choice, I'm very happy with it so far. BTW, the only other machine I'd get
now would be the HP Envy 17-1181nr.
I could still return the Sony, but would get hit with a 15% restocking fee.
The HP Envy has a better graphics card, bigger screen, better resolution, better sound quality,
and more durable exterior. But it's also a 1 lb heavier...a lot to lug around and the cpu is slightly slower.
That said, this is why I am happy & will keep the Sony:
1. i7-740qm cpu...hyper-threads when rendering.
2. nice screen...1600x900, 16.4" diagonal...a good size for me.
3. back-lit keyboard...good to type on...has a good feel to it.
4. very quiet (only noticible when it revs up in auto-over-clocking mode when rendering an animation)
5. good looks
6. Sony quality
7. seems lighter than it is.
Cons (minor criticisms)
1. the left/right "click" buttons on the keypad actually click...aren't smooth like the
alpha/numerics...would have liked them to be right of center vs left, too.
2. The finish is very stylish...a dull dark grey with the VAIO logo...but is easily
marred...in contrast, the HP Envy has an embossed surface that should look good much longer.
I'll just have to be more careful.
All in all, the Sony VAIO F136fx is a great laptop that should last me at least 3 yrs.
BTW, my HP Pavilion 6226 is still working amazingly well...it was only $700, and will still use
it as a backup, and for rendering parts of an animation.
But the Sony is 3-4x faster and will save me a lot of time.
Plan to add 2 more gb ram (8 total), and replace the HD with an Solid-state drive
down the road. But it's working great as is.
I still give it 5 stars. =)
