With all the off-brand aftermarket replacement batteries out there, it took some careful reading to verify that this was a genuine Sony product. It is. I've had it with third party clones. I've tried out the cheap stuff on two previous notebooks with bad results.
I've been using this genuine Sony replacement for six weeks now paying attention to the battery performance. I'm happy to report that it's been working fine. I bought this pack as a replacement to the silver-colored version that was included with my VAIO FW-2xx series. The original pack manufactured over two years ago had a 4400mAH rating on its label. This recent same-model replacement is listed at an improved 4800mAH.
As I recall, with the original pack powering a high-power setting profile, the notebook lasted anywhere from 1:40 to 1:50. My notebook is configured with a hungrier 35watt T9600 CPU and a Radeon graphics chip. Since then, I've maxed the RAM to 8gigs and swapped out the original 5400rpm drive for a 7200rpm one. With the additional power-consumption, I've clocked this replacement battery at 1:50 to 2:10. That's quite acceptable to me given this is the slimmer, lighter version of two batteries offered by Sony. Longer runtimes means putting up with the riser bump and added weight in the extended battery (VGP-BPL13 7200mAH). I'm not ready for that tradeoff yet and an AC outlet is still readily accessible in most of the places I go.
If you're like me and have found that notebooks have reached a speed where they rival what you previously sought in a desktop, you're probably using your current notebook as your primary full-time computer. By my estimates I've put my original battery through at least 800 charge cycles. (More than 2 charge cycles per day, every day) After 14 months of constantly using that pack, it's now worn to the point where it'll only hold around 25 mintues worth of juice. Thus the effort to seek out a genuine replacement -- I don't have time to play return-policy roulette with a third-party clone maker. Back then I was willing to see what saving 25-35% going with an aftermarket "Made in China" pack would offer: flimsy plastic housing, unchargeable pack within 5 weeks, and for the other, poor internal solder joints -- I literally had to SQUEEZE the pack to get something inside to re-align before it'd sometimes work and sometimes not.
With the genuine Sony pack VGP-BPS13A/B, I'm confident it'll provide the same consistent performance (or greater) as the original battery pack. Like the original, this replacement's information label indicates it's Made in Japan. The plastic housing is the same sturdy, textured composite plastic that matches the underside of my VAIO computer. The old cliche still rings true: You get what you pay for. Go with the genuine stuff.
